Multipartyism, Constitutions and the Law in Africa

African states must fashion political systems and constitutional models to suit their politics and history. The objectives of this study may be summarized as follows: (i) to explain the failure, in Africa during the 1960s, of multiparty system based on the liberal concept of democracy, (ii) to describe the present drive for multipartyism in Africa by identifying underlying forces, internal and external, for multipartyism , (iii) to analyze constitutional and legal steps that have been taken to date to accommodate multipartyism, (iv) to theorize on the role of the state vis-a-vis civil society in the consolidation of multipartyism for democratization and (v) to identify constitutional, legal and extralegal safeguards for the succss and sustenance of multipartyism i
